A Letter to My Young Self: Randy September

A Letter to My Young Self

Dear Randy

Never would I ever have imagined being the General Manager: Communications and Public Relations of the Free State Cheetahs. It was never in my plans, even though I grew up in a family where we watched Rugby every Saturday and my father was part of a community Rugby Club and eventually, he became President of the Griffons.

I studied to become a Municipal Manager or a Deputy Director at a governmental department but things did not work out as planned because that is how life is, sometimes we make plans but the Lords purpose always prevails (Proverbs 19:21).

After obtaining my degree I took part in an internship programme at the Department of Education and it was an amazing experience because I worked in the HR department and I did what I enjoy most, and that’s helping people. When my internship ended all posts was frozen and I had to look for employment because I was busy completing my Honores degree part time.

I applied for the Personal Assistant of the Managing Director post and I really did not think I’d get the post, but the Company gave me the opportunity of a lifetime. I was blessed with the best mentor one can ask for Mr. Harold Verster, I learned and am still learning so much from him.

At the time, I started to work at the Free State Cheetahs, I knew a bit about Rugby and during the five years that I have been working here, I gained a lot of knowledge about the sport and I learned to love “Rugby”.

My current position brings me so much joy because I am so proud to be associated with a strong and professional brand like the Toyota Cheetahs. Yes, there are a lot of challenges and Yes, I am aware that this is a male- dominated environment but us women get the work done, and we always do our best and bring our A game.

I’ve learned that sometimes things do not work out as planned but you must adapt and make the best of your circumstances, always.

I’ve learnt that some days you feel like you not strong enough because it’s a man’s world, but you actually stronger at your weakest, and we always rise above the norm and sometimes God sends people into your life to teach you to be the best version of yourself, always embrace being helped and pushed in a positive direction for your future.

May Love and Light follow you, always.

Yours Loving

Randy September
